Getting Published

AUTHORS’ GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED – THE OPTIONS
You have worked hard, and your manuscript is nearly ready. You’ve
proofread and polished. Now it is time to decide how to publish your
book.
There are really only three options.
Traditional Publishing Houses - Submit your
manuscript to traditional publishing houses like Random House. You
earn royalties of perhaps 5-7%.
Commercial “Self-Publishing” – Platforms like
Ingram or Amazon KDP provide a full range of PAID services.
Independent Self-Publishing - Produce and publish
it yourself.
Each option has specific characteristics, not the least of which is
what it costs. Here are the realities of each method.
Traditional Publishing Houses
Companies like Random House or Knopf fall into this
category. You submit your manuscript and, if published, you receive
royalties. This is the most difficult way to get published.
Commercial “Self-Publishing”
Companies like Ingram and Outskirts, and hundreds more,
fall into this category. They provide a range of services and you
will pay for all of it before royalties.
Independent Self-Publishing
This is the method I was taught and still use today 15
years since my first book. You have to do more work, but you control
quality, quantity, and prices. This is by far the most profitable
and reliable way to publish your book.

Amazon has a publishing service called KDP. It has pros & cons but is sometimes the best way to go despite their restrictions.
